Canning Tangerines
Canning is a great way to preserve tangerines and keep them fresh for an extended period.
Ingredients:
- Fresh tangerines
- Water
- Sugar (optional)
- Lemon juice (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Tangerines:
- Peel the tangerines and remove the white pith.
- Separate the segments and remove any seeds.
- Make a Syrup (Optional):
- In a large pot, combine water and sugar (to taste). Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer until the sugar dissolves.
- Add a bit of lemon juice to the syrup to preserve the color and flavor of the tangerines.
- Pack the Jars:
- Sterilize canning jars and lids.
- Pack the tangerine segments tightly into the jars, leaving about 1/2 inch of headspace at the top.
- Add Syrup:
- Pour the hot syrup over the tangerines, leaving 1/2 inch of headspace.
- Remove Air Bubbles:
- Use a non-metallic utensil to remove any air bubbles by running it around the inside of the jar.
- Seal the Jars:
- Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean cloth.
- Place the lids on and screw on the bands until fingertip tight.
- Process the Jars:
- Place the jars in a water bath canner, making sure they are completely covered with water.
- Bring to a boil and process for about 10-15 minutes.
- Cool and Store:
- Carefully remove the jars and let them cool.
- Check the seals and store in a cool, dark place.
Freezing Tangerines
Freezing is another effective method to keep tangerines fresh.
Instructions:
- Prepare the Tangerines:
- Peel the tangerines and separate the segments.
- Remove any seeds and white pith.
- Flash Freeze:
- Place the tangerine segments on a baking sheet in a single layer.
- Freeze for a few hours until solid.
- Store:
- Transfer the frozen segments to airtight freezer bags or containers.
- Label with the date and store in the freezer.
Dehydrating Tangerines
Dehydrating tangerines can extend their shelf life and provide a healthy snack option.
Instructions:
- Prepare the Tangerines:
- Peel the tangerines and slice them into thin rounds.
- Dehydrate:
- Place the slices on dehydrator trays.
- Set the dehydrator to 125-135°F (52-57°C) and dry for 8-12 hours, or until completely dry and leathery.
- Store:
- Store the dried tangerine slices in airtight containers in a cool, dark place.
