apple-butter

Posted on July 30, 2024 by yummy recipes

Apple butter is a delightful, velvety spread that encapsulates the very essence of autumn in a jar. Made by slow-cooking apples with sugar and warm spices, the result is a deep, rich, and intensely flavored condiment that can transform simple toast into a gourmet experience. The slow cooking process caramelizes the natural sugars in the apples, enhancing their sweetness and adding a depth of flavor that is both comforting and luxurious. Whether spread on bread, swirled into yogurt, or used as a glaze for meats, apple butter is a versatile and beloved treat that brings a touch of homemade warmth to any dish.

Ingredients:

  • 6 pounds of apples (about 12 medium-sized apples), peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Apples:
    • Peel, core, and chop the apples into small pieces.
  2. Cook the Apples:
    • Place the chopped apples into a large slow cooker.
    • Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Stir to combine.
  3. Slow Cook:
    • Cover and cook on low for 10 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft and dark brown.
  4. Blend the Apples:
    • Use an immersion blender to puree the apples in the slow cooker until smooth. Alternatively, transfer the apples to a blender and blend until smooth, then return to the slow cooker.
  5. Continue Cooking:
    • Remove the lid and cook on low for an additional 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is thick and spreadable.
  6. Add Vanilla:
    • Stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Store the Apple Butter:
    • Allow the apple butter to cool completely, then transfer to sterilized jars. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or process in a water bath for longer shelf life.
