Ingredients
Dough:
- 7 Tbsp (80g) sugar
- 1 tsp (4g) dry yeast
- 1 cup (250ml) lukewarm milk
- 1 egg
- 2 Tbsp vegetable oil
- 4 cups (500g) flour
- 1 tsp (4g) salt
Filling:
- 1/3 cup (80g) butter, softened
- 1/2 cup (80g) sugar
- Cinnamon, to taste
- 1/2 cup (100g) crushed walnuts
Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 1 1/4 cups (300g) cream cheese, softened
- 3 Tbsp milk
- 1/2 cup (100g) powdered sugar
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar and yeast in lukewarm milk. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center, add the egg, oil, and yeast mixture.
- Mix the ingredients until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. The dough should be soft but not sticky. Add a little more flour if necessary.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
Step 2: Prepare the Filling
- In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, sugar, and cinnamon until well combined.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out on a lightly floured surface to a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Spread the cinnamon-sugar butter mixture evenly over the dough, then sprinkle with crushed walnuts.
Step 3: Shape and Bake
- Roll the dough tightly from one long end to the other, forming a log.
- Slice the log into 12 equal rolls and place them in a greased baking pan, leaving a little space between each roll for expansion.
- Cover the rolls and let them rise for another 30 minutes or until they double in size.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25–30 minutes or until golden brown on top.
Step 4: Make the Cream Cheese Frosting
- In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, milk, and powdered sugar until smooth and creamy.
- Once the rolls are out of the oven, let them cool slightly before spreading the frosting over the top while still warm for a melty, irresistible coating.
